A 52-year-old man has been charged by police investigating a series of rapes and assaults on elderly people across south-east London over 17 years.

Delroy Grant, of Brockley, is due in court charged with five rapes, six indecent assaults and 11 burglaries.

The charges relate to attacks alleged to have happened between 1992 and 2009.

He was arrested as part of Operation Minstead, set up to investigate 108 crimes police believed were committed by a man dubbed the "night stalker".

Mr Grant will appear before Greenwich Magistrates' Court in south-east London.

Detectives arrested the man in the early hours of Sunday in a "pre-planned operation".

£40,000 reward

Forensics experts were making preparations to erect a large screen around Mr Grant's home on Sunday night.

Earlier this month the Metropolitan Police revealed more than 2,000 DNA samples had so far been obtained from suspects as part of the 12-year Operation Minstead inquiry, at a cost of £102,700.

More than 30 officers are involved in the hunt for a man who has been linked to 108 crimes mainly targeting elderly women - the oldest of them 93 - and invariably carried out at night.

A £40,000 reward was offered to encourage the public to come forward with information.
